Senior citizens have a number of issues that can make their taxes more complicated. But they also have access to some tax breaks that aren’t available to younger folks. Here are some tips that will help Canadian seniors maximize their refunds.

– Always file a return. Even if you do not owe any tax, you could get a refund thanks to credits such as the GST/HST credit.
– If you have a spouse or domestic partner, split your pension income. This will put you in a lower tax bracket. However, you cannot split Old Age Security or Canada Pension Plan/Quebec Pension Plan income.
– Keep track of your medical expenses. As long as you have receipts, you can deduct medical expenses that total 3% or more of your net income.
– If you had a physical or mental impairment in 2011, check into the Disability Amount tax credit. If you qualify, you could get a substantially larger refund. In order to claim this credit, you’ll need a Form T2201 completed by your physician.
– Stop your Canada Pension Plan contributions. Working Canadians age 65 to 70 that receive CPP or QPP benefits are not required to make contributions, but they must elect to have them stopped. Doing so will give you more take-home pay and simplify your tax return.
